Hope for people suffering from Schizophrenia

 

 

 

The Richmond Fellowship is the largest network of service providers in the world in the field of mental health care. It had been founded by Ms Elly Jansen in U.K. in  1959. The operations in India started in year 1986. Currently, it has 4 branches in India located at Bangalore, Delhi, Lucknow and Sidlaghatta

 

The new facility of The Richmond Fellowship Society (India) Delhi Branch named “VISHWAS”, housing a Halfway home & Day Care for rehabilitation of people suffering from Schizophrenia, is located at 30/3 Knowledge Park III of Greater Noida. It became operational from 14th January, 2008.

 

It has been custom-designed with inputs from mental health professionals, carers and staff. It has ample greenery with 3 lawns, well ventilated airy rooms with adequate natural light. The landscaping is being planned by an expert in the field and would include lot of trees, flowering plants, creepers which help in Psycho-social rehabilitation.

 

Says Dr. K.M. Khurana, President “Our Delhi Branch, which manages projects in NCR, was started in year 1999 and we opened Halfway Home & Day Care in rented building in Gurgaon. We had ambitious plans but they could not be implemented since we had to shift frequently. Our new building is one of the best facility  for Psycho-social rehabilitation in India. We intend to make it a centre of excellence in mental health care and I appeal to corporate house to support us in this effort.”

 

 

 

 

 The Halfway Home, provides residential care to both male and female patients. It has a capacity for 20 persons. Day Care Centre has a capacity of 40 persons and provides vocational training to persons having mental health problems. The Centre has a comprehensive programme of activities designed to help members. The focus is on development of social and practical skills. The prime objective is to rehabilitate their mental health and gradually integrate them with society through work and other activities. The programmes that are included in their day to day schedule by the trained staff are:

 

  • Activity scheduling
  • Individual and group psycho-therapies
  • Family therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Music therapy
  • Gardening
  • Computer learning
  • Planned Recreation
  • Indoor & Outdoor games

 

The Delhi Branch of Richmond Fellowship has also been engaged in Community Outreach Programme. Its programme had been funded by World Health Organization, Switzerland for 2 years. It has been extending support and care to the underprivileged segments of the society in and around Delhi. The programme would be started in rural areas in Noida and Greater Noida as soon as it finds a suitable alliance partner who can render financial support.
