    Brief History

In the early 1980s the Government of India realized that the rapid rate at which Delhi was expanding would result in chaos. So they planned to develop residential and industrial areas around the capital to reduce the burden of rapid development on the capital. The two areas which were developed were Guragaon and Noida across the border with UP. As a planned expansion, Noida's infrastructure and utilities was carefully laid out. However, the 90s saw huge growth in the Indian economy, and migration to cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai exceeded planning estimates. Noida was developed to be able to accommodate population growth for 20-25 years. But, with the massive influx to Delhi, it was overloaded in just 15 years.

The UP Govt then decided to incorporate the city of Greater Noida, as an extension to Noida, but with better planning incorporating the lessons learned from the Noida development. The idea was to create a world class city. The city was planned to be situated approximately 25 km from Noida. By including a railway station and an international airport, Greater Noida is intended to develop as an independent city. Initially, the city developed extremely rapidly but due to political and economic instability, the development slowed down appreciably. However, it has started to grow again, though at a more moderate pace.

Greater Noida is a planned township. Roads are wide with service lanes for every major road. The sectors are named by letters of the Greek Alphabets. All cabling and utilities are run underground. It is currently planned to be connected to Delhi through Delhi's metro system by 2016.

Recently there has been a spurt in the development of shopping malls and retail stores. Major retail chains such as Tata Croma, More Retail, Reliance Fresh, Reliance Footprints, etc have set up business in Greater Noida.

The Development model of Greater Noida is:

    • Provision of Quality Infrastructure
    • Attract Industries
    • Employment Generation
    • Growth & Development of the City

Greater Noida has emerged as a modern model of farsighted town planning. Availability of basic infrastructure is planned to exceed demand at all stages of development and inter-flowing green spaces, a grid iron pattern of wide roads for an efficient transport system, and a unique integration of industrial, commercial, institutional and residential zones.
There's even an 18-hole, 236-acre PGA-standard golf course designed by renowned-golfer Greg Norman. And an endless supply of unpolluted, fresh air!

Being developed on 20,000 hectares with wide roads, underground cabling and drainage system, the city offers amenities and infrastructural facilities of international standards. Among them : Reputed Educational Institutions, Shopping Centres, Medical facilities, Aesthetically-developed Theme Parks and Entertainment Complexes- and even a 222 acre international designer Golf Course.

With an expected population of 3 lakhs up to 2001, 7 lakhs up to 2011 and 12 lakhs up to 2021, Greater Noida City has been designed for planned growth to ensure supply will always exceed demand.

Exposition Mart This will be India’s first state-of-the-art Exposition Mart for Cottage and Handicraft sector at Greater Noida, set up by Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India for the promotion of the exports of handicrafts from India for the cottage sector i.e. handicrafts, handlooms, carpet and jute etc.
This is based on the pattern of Shanghai Mart and other International Marts. The entire Exposition Mart will have permanent contact throughout the year reliable supply, quick turnover, capacity to absorb new technologies and design and round the clock international marketing.

    Taj International Airport

    • International Airport hub has been planned closed to Greater Noida city to facilitate tourism, cargo, aviation and non-aviation facilities
    • The Taj International Airport will be directly connected to the Taj Expressway, which has access for New Delhi via DND Flyway and Greater Noida Expressway. These are already operational

Transport Hub Greater Noida Authority intends to develop an integrated transportation Hub in the city spread across approx 600 acres.
The proposed transport Hub will provide services for the range of transportation modes including an Inter State Bus Terminus and a Railway Station It will function as a major transfer point for bus and rail transit operations. Further, the hub will be combined with provisions for vehicle parking of all type of vehicles, warehousing, pedestrian information services and rail service to function as a multimodal transportation centre. Passenger traffic originating in the east and destined for hill stations in the north, will also use this station as a drop off point. The site identified for the integrated Transportation Hub is the existing Boraki Railway Station, which is along the northern railway main line connecting Delhi and Kolkata.

Night Safari GNIDA is planning to develop a Night Safari in the city in order to create awareness about environment & ecology ,to provide a source for recreation to residents and to spur tourism in Greater Noida .It is being developed on the lines of open Zoological gardens already established in China and Singapore.GNIDA plans to have a unique concept where visitors can view the animals at night in the open wilderness, but confined to specified spaces and with proper illumination for night conditions. The objective is to augment Greater Noida as a premier tourist destination. Renowned zoo designer Bernard Harrison, who has designed the famous Singapore night safari, will be designing the upcoming Greater Noida night safari, according to the report. The Greater Noida night safari will be India's first and the world's fourth - the others being in Singapore, China and Thailand. The night safari, to be set up on over 222 hectares of land, will be located along the Yamuna Expressway near Gautam Budh University, around 40 km from New Delhi. The zoo will have animals like leopards, tigers, crocodiles, gibbons and crocodiles. Only lions will be brought from Africa.

Night Safari of Greater Noida is now in lime light as it is being considered under PPP

With an aim to give fillip to tourism industry in the state, the Uttar Pradesh government today decided to speed up the process of developing a wildlife night park at Greater Noida through PPP mode. At a high-level meeting, Chief Minister Minister Akhilesh Yadav decided to consider a bid invitation process for the 'Night Safari' project soon. The proposed world-class Night Safari, with closed environment and controlled conditions, will be a first-of-its kind in India and second in Asia after Singapore, official sources said. UP Chief Secretary Javed Usmani will head a committee that will monitor the progress of this project to ensure its time-bound implementation, they said, adding that the Greater Noida Authority will conduct the bidding process. Apart from Usmani, Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner Anil K Gupta, Principal Secretaries of Tourism, Forest and Housing, the CEO of Greater Noida, the meeting was also attended by Acting High Commissioner of Singapore, Jonathan Tow. Gupta said the state government will invite bids for selection of developer for this one-of-its-kind safari. "To be developed under PPP mode, the state government equity will be in the form of land, while the investment will be made by the developer," he added. About possible hindrances due to land issues, Gupta said that the already earmarked land of around 102 hectares did not require land use change because it is already approved for "recreational green". "The ambitious nocturnal zoo project has received statutory approvals from the Central Zoo Authority and the Supreme Court. No commercial construction or housing will be allowed within the safari area, which is proposed to encompass outdoor natural setting for 40 percent animals of Indian sub-continent and 60 percent animals from outside," he added. The Night Safari project was first initiated in the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav regime in 2005 with a view to promote tourism, environment conservation, afforestation and generate employment for local youths

Ravan Temple…Just a shot away from the capital is the nondescript village of Bisrakh in Greater Noida. All the glitz surrounding Dussehra is missing here. Instead, a deathly calm prevails. That's because locals believe this is the day when the most famous son of the village was slain - Ravana, the lord of Lanka.

This village will now have a temple dedicated to the king of Lanka and will have a life-size idol of him. A registered body called the Kaushikeshwar Jyotirlingam Ravana Temple Society has laid the foundation of the temple where Lord Shiva and Ravana will be the primary deities. It would come up at a cost of Rs 2 crore. A special five-and-a-half foot idol of the Lanka king was commissioned in Jaipur for Rs 1.5 lakh and will be installed here along with a 42-foot Shiva Lingam.
