Abhay Narayan Mallick

Pandit Shri. Abhay Narayan Mallick was born on 19th March, 1937 in a Dhrupad singing- Brahmin family of Mallick's in village Amta, in Darbhanga District of Bihar. His father Late Shri. Jay Narayan Mallick was a great connoisseur of music besides being highly qualified as a lawyer. His mother Late Smt. Jaya Mallick was in herself a great treasure of local folk music. He inherited the sacraments (sanskar) of music from his grand father Pt. Shri Beni Madhav Mallick. He was a great master of Dhrupad and was a source of inspiration for his cousin Pt. Ram Chatur Mallick.

At the age of 10 years, he stunned his elders by tuning the Tanpura perfectly and won-over his guru to become disciple. He started the training of music under Guru-Shishya Parampara from his guru Late Padamshri Pt. Ramchatur Mallick at the age of Fourteen under the patronage of Raja Bahadur Bishweshwar Singh. He started to learn the moods and the divine structure of ragas. He learnt the finer and intrinsic parts of the ragas with relevant text. He grasped the rare Bandishes and Dhrupad which the tradition has been sustaining since centuries under the Guru – Shishya Parampara. After continuous strict perseverance and a daily and systematic 8 Hrs of Riyaazand Taleem, he managed to accompany his guru as vocal supporter at the age of Twenty years. This way his learning continued for 18 years since he started.

After 5 years of learning , in 1954 he gave his first performance at Raj Nagar Durbar (Court) on Durga Puja Eve. The Jublient and generous “ Maharaja” gave him Rs.501/- as a prize greatly impressed by him. He patted his shoulder and advised to keep it up.

Singing Style :
He has a major touch of his guru's style of singing. His divine voice coupled with his vibrant and devotional style distinguishes him from other singers. He has got gravity and sobriety in tone – production. There is profuse use of meend and gamak in the Alaap portion when the laya is fast. He gives prime importance to the clarity of the text in Dhrupad singing besides, being strict in its rendition as it has been taught by his master. His renditions in the Taar-Saptak soothes the senses of listners.

Its noteworthy that he not only sings Dhrupad but has equa authority and panache on Khayal, Thumri, Kajri and other folk forms. Being a regular attendant of Durbar for 18 years with his guru, he has a stock of rare Bandishes. In his style, his spell-bound performance often deceives the audiences, who misjudge him to be a Khayal or Thumri maestro.

Achievements :
He is a top-grade artist in A.I.R. He is a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 2001. In 1971 he received fellowship from Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi. He got the title of “SURMANI” from Sur Singar in 1972; “DHRUPAD BHUSAN” from Dhrupad Society, Indore in 1990, & “DHRUPAD RATTAN” from Dhrupad Society, Indore in 1996 to name a few.

He was the jury member in the selection committee for “TANSEN AWARD” and “SHIKHAR SAMMAN” in 1996. He was also the jury member for the “KALIDAS AWARD” and “KUMAR GANDHARVA AWARD” in 1999.

As an artist he has performed throughout the country, attending all musical concerts and conferences. In a seminar convened by Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, he demonstrated the ancient bandishes of Dhrupad. He performed at the Russian Embassy where he won great applaud and was made the patron of “Indo-Russian Cultural Committee”. He participated in “International Music Festival” in 1993, organized by ICCR and Sangeet Natak Academy. In 1981, he accompanied his guru, Pt. Pamchatur Mallick in the “Indian Festival” held in Germany which attracted the crowd by his effective ancient Dhrupad singing. Germans took great interest in Dhrupad and appreciated his style. Many students have done M.A. (music, Doctorate and Phd. under his guidance.

Sanjay Kumar Mallick

I got inspiration in Music from my family itself. In our Mallick Gharana enriched the Gauhar Bani which was introduced by Late Pt. Radha Krishna Sharma & Karta Ram Sharma the followers of this Mallick Gharana from Tansen to Bhupat Khan. My grand father Padamshree Late Pt. Ramchatur Mallick who was a great mastro of Dhrupad under this tradition which flourished in the Royal Court of Darbhanga. At present this tradition is being following by S.N.A. Awardee & Dhrupad Rantna Awardee Pt. Abhay Narayan Mallick who is my father and a leading Dhrupad Exponent of this era.

Following the same tradition in Music I undertook the basic training in Music from my Grand Father Late Padamshree Pt. Ramchartur Mallick. Under his guidance I learnt the basic tacts of Dhurupad Gayaki (Sytle of singing) of Sainia Gharana after the death of my Grandfather, Padamshree Pt. Ramchatur Mallick, following the Guru Shishya Parampara I undertook music training under the guidance of my father and Guru Pt. Abhay Narayan Mallick. As for my specialization I got training of khayal, Thumri Dadra & Chaiti also from my Guru.
